Ray: There's really no good reason to limit the transmission to third gear. The more time you spend in your highest gear (overdrive), the better your gas mileage. And the higher the gear, the fewer times the engine turns for the same amount of distance traveled, so the longer the engine lasts.

Does overdrive use more gas?

No, it actually burns LESS gas, and that's part of the point. Overdrive means that for every revolution of the engine, the wheels will turn greater than one revolution. This allows for travel at higher speeds while keeping engine RPM down. So, they use less fuel in overdrive than in a lower gear.
